Sleep is natural, reversible period of unconscious rest for the mind and body. Our two internal biological systems, circadian rhythm and homeostasis, regulate when the body needs to rest or wake. Specifically, the compound adenosine and the body's internal clock in tandem with certain environmental cues including light and temperature. Sleep patterns and needs vary significantly for everybody. For example, a baby needs 16-18 hours of sleep while an adult may need 7-9 hours. However, regardless of our individual needs, sleep is necessary to maintain good health throughout our lives. If the human body does not receive quality sleep it can undermine proper mental health, physical health, quality of life, safety and raise the risk of developing chronic illnesses.
